Livestream on December 5

Are you aware that Iowa is 50th in the nation for the number of mental health beds and 46th in the nation for mental health workforce availability? With these staggering statistics, we, as a community, need to engage in discussions to improve access to mental health services.

To jump start this discussion, the DSM Register is holding a mental health forum with Iowa’s gubernatorial candidates at DSM University. The tickets for this event were gone in three days! Due to the large outcry of citizens not knowing what to do or who to turn to, the Catholic Daughters and AMOS are combining efforts to live stream this event on Tuesday, December 5, from 6:30-8:00 pm in the Banquet Room at OLIH, followed by a short discussion. Please join us for this event starting at 6:15.

Volunteer tutoring opportunity:

St. Vincent de Paul is in need of people to help adults improve their reading and math skills.  Background in teaching is helpful but not required.  Classes are held at our downtown office on Tuesday and Thursdays from 5:00 – 7:30 pm and on the south side on Tuesday and Thursdays from 9:30 – noon.  Please call Andrew Gross at (515) 480-3583 for more information.  Our goal is to get them ready for  the DMACC  HiSET (formerly GED) class.

We need snacks!

If your group, company or family is looking to do something good this Advent season, consider something as simple as bringing a few snacks to Catholic Charities’ homeless shelter. The shelter, (formerly known as St. Joseph’s) is always in need of meal providers, as well as yogurt, string cheese, and protein items for night time snack. If you are interested, contact Ashley Raske, Shelter Coordinator, at 515-282-1235 to schedule a night to provide a meal, donate, or sponsor a meal.
