St. Luke’s Knights are selling Christmas Wreaths

Have you thought about your holiday gift giving? Purchase the perfect way to decorate your home or office and show your holiday spirit. The St. Luke’s Knights of Columbus are taking orders for beautifully handcrafted, fresh and fragrant Balsam Fir Christmas Wreaths to decorate inside or outside. Christmas wreaths make wonderful holiday gifts and will be available for pick-up or delivery before Thanksgiving. Please contact us to receive an order form by email or fill one out in the gathering space the weekends of October 14/15 or 21/22. Each 25-inch wreath is $23. Orders need to be placed by October 29. Proceeds go to the St. Luke Building Fund and other Knights of Columbus charities.

Faster than the Pastor

Faster than the Pastor, A Journey to the Cross is a 3.14 mile event to be held at Raccoon River Park on October 21 beginning at 8:30 am, cost is $34.95 if registered by October 8; Kids’ obstacle course is at 10:00 am, cost is $15; Family rate is $125. The community outreach/collection will be gift cards for InnerVisions Health Care. Bring extra cash to support the Haitian Initiative—Feeding Hope by purchasing iron crosses hand made by artists in Haiti. Go to their website for more information/to register.

Catholics & Lutherans Conclude the 500th Anniversary Marking the Reformation

On October 22, Catholics and Lutherans will come together at St Mark's Lutheran Church in DSM to mark the concluding service of the 500th Anniversary Year of the Protestant Reformation. Lutherans and Catholics first joined together in prayer on November 4, 2016, to kick off a year of examining the historical background, recent documents and efforts to understand each tradition better and spend time with each other through joint congregation activities. Calling all young adults

If you’re in your 20s or 30s, you’re invited to join Novos Young Adults this Thursday, October 26. The evening begins with Mass at St. Ambrose Cathedral (confessions at 6:30, Mass at 7:00 pm) and then head to El Bait Shop together about 8:00 pm. Join us for some or all of the evening. This is My Brave

The Ankeny Mental Health Ministry presents an encore performance of ‘This is My Brave’—an uplifting presentation of touching essays, original music, comedy and poetry by individuals living with, or loving someone with, a mental illness. Join us on Sunday, October 29 at First United Methodist, 206 SW Walnut St, Ankeny from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased after Mass on October 21 & 22 or from the OLIH office. 

In addition, there will be a Mass for Mental Health Awareness on Saturday, October 28, 5:00 pm, at OLIH.  NAMI Greater DSM and Catholic Charities will have a resource table in the Gathering Space after Mass with more information.  Questions? Call 515-777-0191.

Dowling Catholic's Annual Open House

Dowling Catholic High School is hosting it's annual Open House for Prospective Students on Sunday, November 5 from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm.  Families can take a tour of the school, meet the teachers, moderators, and coaches and learn about financial aid opportunities.  There are prizes to win and games to play!  It’s a fun day for the whole family!  

Catholic’s DIVORCE HEALING Program

St. Theresa is hosting The Catholic’s Divorce Survival Guide ministry for men and women who have suffered from divorce at St Catherine of Siena beginning on November 7. The 12-week program features 30-minute DVD shows each week that cover topics of shock, denial, anger, grief, guilt, forgiveness, money, the courts, the kids, the ex-spouse, annulment, dating, sexuality, spirituality, remarriage or staying single, and much more. Home Faith 2nd Issue Now Available!

The Saint Joseph Educational Center is pleased to announce that the 2nd issue of Home Faith magazine is now available online!  The magazine is an outreach effort to local Catholic families including stories of faith, prayers, and reflection questions.  It offers wisdom for dealing with the common issues and challenges that come with sharing faith in the home. 

We need snacks!

If your group, company or family is looking to do something good this Advent season, consider something as simple as bringing a few snacks to Catholic Charities’ homeless shelter. The shelter, (formerly known as St. Joseph’s) is always in need of meal providers, as well as yogurt, string cheese, and protein items for night time snack. If you are interested, contact Ashley Raske, Shelter Coordinator, at 515-282-1235 to schedule a night to provide a meal, donate, or sponsor a meal.

Lay Formation Program in Spanish

The Diocese of Des Moines is in the process of recruiting leaders who would like to participate in the next cohort for the Lay Formation Program that will start in January 2018. Please contact Mayra, 237-5011  for more information. 

Tour of Scotland

The Newman Catholic Student Center at The University of Iowa is sponsoring a 12-day tour of England, Scotland and Wales March 9-20, 2018.  Tour hosts will be Bishop Emeritus Martin Amos and Newman Center rep, April Rouner.
